Windows Phone 7 Outnumbered by… Windows 98?

12 January 2011 By

Windows Phone 7, acclaimed by critics as an excellent mobile operating system and the beneficiary of Microsoft’s advertising dollars, continues to struggle to catch on.  One odd observation, based on traffic coming through the Chitika advertising network, is that it’s currently outnumbered by Windows 98.

Win-98-vs-Win-Phone-7

We at Chitika Research monitor traffic shares of various operating systems coming through our network.  As of the beginning of January, Windows Phone 7 was sending about half as much web traffic as Windows 98 to our network of over 100,000 publishers.

For a reference on Windows Phone 7′s growth over the past month, in our December post we found that WP7 was sending about 0.4% as much traffic as iPhone and Android (combined).  At present, that number has risen slightly – to an average of 0.44%.  Growth is happening, but not very quickly.

Android-iPhone-and-WP7-January

The good news for Microsoft, though, is that Windows Phone 7 is already halfway to the market share that all other mobile Windows builds own.  It’s still got a long way to go, and it’s nowhere near a threat to Android and iPhone yet, but it is growing.

I have a few relatively small websites and Google Analytics has shown the same thing for me with more people having Windows 98 than Windows Phone 7.

Going off topic majorly – I have also noticed that Google TV is starting to show up in my operating systems, but no sign of Apple TV. Is this something Chitika have experienced?

I have a reliable estimate of WP7 sales volume using the default and auto launched Facebook app as a proxy.

WP7 is under 1.5% of sales volume, installed base is under 0.5%. It is decelerating since launch.

  • Chitika touts goofy stats: Windows Phone 7 being beaten by…Windows 98? | Acelaweb.com

[...] In news that doesn’t quite make sense, online ad firm Chitika releases some not-so-surprising stats: more people are using Windows 98 than Windows Phone 7 to browse the web. It’s not much of a secret that despite a high-profile launch back in October, Windows Phone 7 has gotten off to a slow start with consumers. So far, neither Microsoft nor its partners have been at all specific about how many Windows Phone 7 devices they’ve sold, but one indication might be how often WIndows Phone 7 devices are seen on the Internet. Online advertising network Chitika runs services across more than 100,000 publishers, and last month it said traffic from the iPhone and Android were beating Windows Phone 7 by over 100 to 1. This month, Chitika has offered up an even more-embarrassing metric: traffic from Windows Phone 7 devices is just barely over half the traffic Chitika still sees from systems running Windows 98.
