iPhone Carrier Wars: Verizon up to 12%

15 March 2011 By

Since the launch of the Verizon iPhone, we’ve been tracking iPhones through our system and breaking down what percentage come from AT&T vs. Verizon.  As of today, Verizon is up to 12% of all iPhone web usage, based on data from the Chitika ad network.

The data is based on a 24-hour rolling period, so it’s a good snapshot of what iPhones are in use right now.  For Verizon to pick up that big of a share of iPhone users in about a month is impressive, and doesn’t bode particularly well for AT&T (which, as we’ve reported before, is woefully lacking in Android users).

Edit/Update: So apparently there was a minor SNAFU with our databases that’s causing the tracker to jump around a bit.  The databases that feed the tracker went down for a few hours, and are messing about a bit with the numbers as they come back online and repopulate the missing hours.

Edit/Update 2: 12:37pm 3/16: Database issue was taken care of pretty quickly (for those of you wondering about the above edit), and the 12.7% number was legit.  For the 24-hour period ending at 5pm EST yesterday, Verizon iPhones made up 12.7% of all iPhone usage.  Today, that number is down to 9.4%, which is quite interesting; it makes us wonder if Verizon and AT&T iPhone users have different usage patterns.  The spike in Verizon traffic was quite real – I’ve combed through the raw data logs multiple times.

Regardless, Verizon is making massive inroads into the iPhone user community.  Over the past seven days (so averaging the spike in with overall growth over the past week), Verizon’s iPhone is at about 10%, and it continues to grow.

We’ll keep you updated on the market shares as we see them, and I’ll see if I can dig any different usage patterns out between the two iPhone user bases.
